An inaugural meeting of villagers and friends regarding the formation of a village gardening club was held in July 1992, and the first meeting proper of the Club in the village hall followed in late September of that year.
The Club's objects are the promotion, for its members in the area of Rauceby, of various talks, activities and events, relative to gardening / horticultural matters with a view to members consolidating / improving their knowledge and interest in such matters.
Meetings are held in the Rauceby Village Hall, normally on the fourth Tuesday monthly, in the evening between September and April of the following year, inclusive. Speakers are regularly engaged for these meetings to talk on horticultural subjects, sometimes with a humorous tinge, generally illustrated by photographic slides. Initially mainly local speakers were engaged but speakers travelling 100 miles, and more, is quite common now. Ever since the club's inception there has been an annual coach outing, usually in the summer, visiting two gardens in the day. Such outings have been to Yorkshire , Essex , Shropshire, Cheshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire.
The Club's membership level has been mainly steady at around fifty to sixty, support also being drawn from outside the village, for example from Sleaford, Ancaster, Cranwell, or Silk Willoughby. The Club prides itself on its meetings having a warm and friendly atmosphere. Expenditure on Speakers is increasing as it becomes more difficult to arrange truly local speakers, and their travelling expenses become more contentious.
Through careful management and budgeting, the management committee is of seven members. The Club's finances have always been healthy, largely influenced by the income raised from the annual coffee morning and plant sale in April each year. Membership fees are very modest and visitors are always welcome.
The 2009 programme includes talks on "Fuchsias", "Umbellifers" (included in this group of plants are Astrantias and Eryngiums), "Avoiding Boring Borders", and "Barking up the Wrong Tree".
